A day of culinary and historical discovery in Port-Louis that will please every member of the family, guided by people who love their island.   DunienZil, a passionate duo   “We want our clients to leave this adventure enriched by an authentic, human and unique experience”. This is the credo of Amélie and Laurent, the founders of this small agency which, in addition to electric bike rides, offers discovery tours off the beaten track.   The Aapravasi Ghat, a quarantine site in Port-Louis, Mauritius   The discovery of Port-Louis on foot begins with the port and the museum of the first immigrants from India and elsewhere who walked on these black stone steps. We have previously mentioned this place which recalls the history of these immigrants, many of whom are the descendants of a number of Mauritians.   The colourful and lively streets of Port-Louis   Walking through the streets of Port-Louis is like walking through the daily life of the inhabitants and users of the capital. With practically all the ministries and numerous offices, the city bustles with activity, colours and smells. Street vendors prevail in these cobblestone streets, a legacy of the colonial past. Vegetables, fruits, street food, textiles, utensils, Chinese products…, Mauritians are numerous to press around these overloaded stalls. People haggle hard and call out to each other in a happy hubbub.   The bazaar of Port-Louis, Mauritius, between market halls and oriental souks   It’s time to explore the crowded alleys of Port-Louis’ market, very popular and an opportunity to get closer to local life. Authentic, colourful and full of unknown aromas, the bazaar is divided into different sections that you should browse through with pleasure: vegetables, fruits, textiles, herbs, handicrafts, street food… All of Mauritius and its multicultural heritage are present in its stalls.   Street art and street food of Port-Louis, Mauritius   Art has been proudly displayed in the streets of the capital for several years now. Visitors who take the time to explore the streets to discover the local talents can enjoy a journey of art and identity. Like all administrative capitals, Port-Louis has street food on every corner. This tour offers the opportunity to stop and taste the local specialities: farata (salted pancake), samoussas, mines (Chinese noodles), dumplings, briani, alouda…   China Town, the quiet side   Walking through some of the streets of Chinatown, time seems to stand still. Chinese pharmacies with their jars filled with mysterious products, old boutiques, outdated hardware stores, the museum of Chinese immigration: explore one of the most fascinating parts of Mauritius.   Historic Port Louis, Mauritius   The tour ends with the discovery of the historic buildings, including the Theatre, the magnificent Jummah Mosque and the old colonial houses. In just half a day, you will have travelled back in time and gained a better understanding of Mauritius’ unique socio-cultural mix.   This walking tour of Port Louis is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Mauritius and to discover authentic facets of this small island with surprising charms. Eight sweet treats to try in Mauritius

Mauritius is home to a rich cultural mix and sugar cane. The combination of these two elements results in eight very local treats for you to discover, taste and, for some of them, to bring back in your luggage.   – A coconut macatia at the bakery Somewhere between a bun and a brioche, this pastry has a melting heart of grated coconut and sugar. An ideal snack for young and not-so-young alike. A few years ago, merchants would ride through towns and villages on bicycles, shouting “So bouillan, macatia coco…!” (Very hot, macatia coco). People used to rush to taste the bread rolls fresh from the oven. Today, they are mostly found in bakeries.   – An alouda at Port-Louis market A must in the bazaar, following a tour during which our senses were stimulated by the scent. A stop in one of the stalls serving this thirst-quenching drink of Asian origin in the heat of the capital is a real treat. It consists of milk flavoured with rose or almond, with grated agar-agar and “touk maria” (tapioca seeds). Mauritians love them!   – Fruit pastes from Les Vergers de Labourdonnais In their orchards in the north of the island, mangoes, passion fruits, pineapples, papayas, guavas, litchis, citrus fruits and other types of fruit are grown all year round to provide gourmets with delicate and delicious fruit pastes. Savour them in Mauritius and bring them back as gifts in their attractive gift boxes.   – The “Napolitene” (Neapolitan) This small shortbread biscuit with jam and a glazed sugar coating is a must in Mauritius. Perfect with tea, it can be eaten several days after purchase. It is available in all shops and supermarkets.   – Gato coco A delicacy made of grated coconut and sugar that comes in a conical shape and is oven baked, thus caramelising it. Also available in shops.   – Maï” pudding (corn-starch pudding)   A traditional Mauritian dessert, also found in street food and food shops. Probably a legacy from the English. Served in square or triangular portions, the pudding is covered with a layer of grated coconut powder.   – Gato zinzli Sweet potato, rice flour and lentil paste are the ingredients of this Chinese pastry covered with sesame seeds. These small fried balls are delicious and are traditionally offered during the Chinese New Year. They are nevertheless available in shops all year round.   – Mauritian chocolates The first Belgian chocolate maker produced his first dark chocolates in 1983. Since then, the Van Ann brand has greatly diversified its range of chocolates, which delicately blend with local products. Today, several chocolate artisans also offer Mauritian products in shops as well as in local craft shops.   A lot of creativity and new interpretation of sweets from other origins: in Mauritius, the Sugar King has some delicious surprises in store for you!

What to do and visit in July and August in Mauritius?

  • 27/04/2022

The mild southern winter in Mauritius makes it a perfect destination to escape the heat of the European summer and provides an ideal change of scenery with pleasant temperatures. The months of July and August are the best time to discover this favourite holiday destination for many travelers looking to escape the peak season. With many activities running a little less busy and fewer visitors, Mauritius makes for a refreshing break during these two months to discover and try out sports or cultural activities that suit this season perfectly.    What is the weather like in Mauritius in July and August?   Like many tropical islands, Mauritius benefits from a mild winter, with temperatures ideal for sightseeing and many activities without suffering from the humid heat of summer. With average daytime temperatures around 24° on the coast and slightly lower on the plateaus, and very little rainfall, swimming remains pleasant and invigorating with a delightfully pleasant water temperature. The many rain-free days mean that many outdoor activities can be planned, and the lower visitor frequency means that there is more opportunity to plan excursions and outings. The sunshine is almost guaranteed, the days are beautiful but shorter with an earlier sunset, around 5.30 pm, but still full of wonderful shades. In the evening and on the coasts, it is advisable to wear extra cover because of the trade winds which are particularly strong at this time of year, much to the delight of board sports enthusiasts. Expect temperatures between 18° on the highlands and 20° on the coast in the evening. This season is perfect for those who are not comfortable with the heat and wish to enjoy their holiday in Mauritius to the full.   Surf and kite sports: it’s the perfect time of year! The trade winds prevail during the southern winter, making July and August two perfect months for surfing and kiting. The water is slightly cooler but adrenaline compensates for this difference. During these two months, boardsports enthusiasts benefit from ideal conditions to live their passion to the full and enjoy both the exceptionally mild climate and the seasonal winds. Thus, surfers and kiters are more likely to visit the beautiful beaches of Mauritius and its clear lagoons to live their passion. If you are a surfer or want to learn this sport, Tamarin is the place to be. The small fishing village is home to the most famous spot in Mauritius, the mythical Dale spot discovered in the 70s, the meeting point of surfers. The less adventurous can just surf the waves in the bay’s rollers, which are less impressive but still provide intense sensations, and the spots are always full of delighted beginners and foam artistsAnother site, another board sport, kitesurfing, practiced in the Morne in the southwest of Mauritius, whose lagoon offers a large sailing area.Set against the fine sandy beach and in the clear waters, the kite sails rip the azure sky with sparkling colours. The sensations of gliding on the water, of flying and the thrill of performing aerial figures are exhilarating and intense. with an on-shore spot dedicated to beginners and a port side shore spot for the more advanced The Morne spot is the ideal place to learn or improve your kiteboarding techniques. Windsurfing and wing foiling have ideal wind conditions for the practice of these boardsports requiring strength and balance.    An introduction to sugar cane harvesting Sugar cane fields are to be found almost everywhere in Mauritius, and the island has built much of its economic prosperity on these tall, sugar-laden stalks. During the tropical winter, the cane is harvested and finely crushed to extract the sugar. The sugar harvest begins between June and July. The fields are bustling with activity. Cane cutters equipped with sabres on small cultivated portions or in the acres of fields harvesters are active. In the fine dust of the bagasse, unusual landscapes are unveiled: old pipes, caves, small discreet altars, spectacular views of the coastline… But the ultimate experience is to discover in a fun and supervised way the work of a cane cutter. Luckily, l’Aventure du sucre offers an introduction to harvesting every Wednesday. Why not join us for a visit to one of the last factories still in operation? And fully immerse yourself in this Mauritian heritage.   Enjoy a Chinese fondue Chinese fondue is originally from the Sichuan province in China. This convivial dish, like the Burgundy or cheese fondues, or raclette, keeps the body and soul warm in July and August in Mauritius. Low in calories (no oil or cheese, fish rather than meat, or vegetarian), this dish is perfectly suited to the southern winter and will take you on a journey through the delights of oriental cuisine. Reservations should be made the day before with your concierge who will advise you on the best Chinese restaurant near your hotel residence. Race watching This passion, typical of Mauritius, attracts large crowds of aficionados on race weekends. Launched in 1812, the horse racing season attracts a great deal of interest from bettors and spectators. At the heart of the racetrack, a joyful and noisy crowd rushes to follow their favourites, and bets are placed. An unforgettable experience in the heart of one of the oldest Mauritian traditions. Stock up on woolens One of the Mauritian specialities is knitwear made from yarn, lambswool, merino, cotton and cashmere, all of which are beautifully made and competitively priced. All shopping centres have their own shops selling knitted fabrics, but you may also visit the factory outlets located in the north of the island, a twenty-minute drive from Mythic Suites & Villas. A holiday in Mauritius taken in July and August is an opportunity for a deeper immersion into the Mauritian lifestyle and for new and memorable experiences, with a pleasant tropical climate, plenty of sunshine and no crowds. All good reasons to book your next holiday in one of our hotels.

Three typical meals of a day in Mauritius

  • 27/04/2022
  • Uncategorized

The extraordinary ethnic and cultural mix of Mauritius makes it a land of plenty when it comes to discovering the delights of the local flavours. Having brought back their culinary traditions and spices from distant lands, Mauritians love to explore a wide range of savours and aromas. Recipes and eating habits provide a tasty blend of pleasures. You are invited to discover them in three typical meals during your stay in Mauritius.   A rural touch at breakfast Forget the standard continental breakfast and try something very different with the in-villa catering service in our residences. Typical of the countryside and for early risers, this Indian breakfast is meant to provide sustenance before a hard day’s work. A strong, milky and very sweet local tea is taken to help rehydrate. The ancients used to boil all the ingredients of this chai (Indian tea) on a wood fire, and the strong taste of the black tea leaves is counterbalanced by brown sugar, a favourite among Mauritians. Gato piment (a fried dough of dried grains and chilli) filled in homemade bread (a local round loaf) or sofé rice (the leftover mix of rice and side dishes from the previous day reheated) make for a hearty meal. Fruit eaters will complete their menu by enjoying a banana at the end. You are now ready for a full day activity!   Briani’s heady spice ode for lunch Briani or biryani is a dish originating from the Indian subcontinent made with rice (usually basmati), spices, meat, eggs and potatoes. Imported to Mauritius by Muslim indentured labourers and immigrants, it is a traditional meal enjoyed by all communities. Briani is a convivial dish, which requires a lot of preparation beforehand. It is traditional at weddings where the whole neighbourhood comes to help with its preparation and is cooked over a wood fire in a deksi (large tin container) sealed with breadcrumbs. The meat used (beef or chicken) is marinated overnight in yoghurt together with various spices to make it as soft as possible. Typical spices include cardamom, star anise, cloves, cumin, fried onions, in an exquisite and succulent flavour combination. Served with cucumber and yoghurt for easy digestion, as well as tomato chutney, the briani is a hymn to generosity, sharing and love of fine produce. A nap or a walk to digest is a perfect way to enjoy briani.   Heavenly Light Dinner Dim Sum  Dim Sum originated in China thousands of years ago and bear all the mysteries of Asia in their delicate transparency. These small bites of vegetables, meat, shrimp or fish wrapped in won ton dough are steamed and presented in small circular baskets made of woven bamboo. Chinese restaurants all serve them on their menus. Our recommendation: order several sorts to add variety to your meal. Accompanied by soy sauce or red chilli, Dim Sum is an ideal light and delicious dinner.   Mouth-watering? Contact the residence’s concierge and let our experts advise you for an exceptional sensory and tasting experience.
